NoSQL Databases Weekly Review 33
This last week is pretty simple to summarize: the CAP theorem with flavors of CAP is wrong, CAP doesn’t apply, CAP explained, etc.:
- NoCAP… is wrong: about Nati Shalom’s post. The comment thread is even better than the post itself.
- Michael Stonebraker’s clarifications on the CAP Theorem: Stonebraker’s revisited the CAP topic once again.
- Problems with CAP: Daniel Abadi’s related post on extending the CAP theorem
- CAP theorem continued: someone is wrong on the internet: Jeff Darcy’s take on Stonebraker’s clarifications on the CAP theorem
- The CAP theorem… again: the “complete” discussion around the CAP theorem
- Last, but not least, the weekend NoSQL video: MongoDB and CAP theorem
There were definitely more interesting posts, but they got less attention than this whole CAP theorem revisited. My favorites:
- An Engineering Mantra: NoSQL, SQL, Is that the Question?
- NoSQL databases and the Cloud with Guy Harrison
- Storage Internal Data Formats
- Choosing a Datastore
- CouchDB Case Study: Building a Track and Trace Application

NoSQL Databases Weekly Review 32
Last week most read posts about NoSQL databases
As you could expect the top news this week where about MongoDB Auto-sharding and Foursquare Downtime and then Foursquare MongoDB Outage Post Mortem. And I think there will be some more on this topic in the upcoming week.
- MapReduce and Hadoop Future: does Google Caffeine announcement make any difference to MapReduce and/or Hadoop future? A somehow related question is if Michael Stonebraker was right about MapReduce?
- Cassandra: Modeling A Facebook-Style Messenger: I said it before: from all NoSQL databases, the wide-column model is probably the most complex, so every examples and tutorial we can get they’ll prove useful.
- Why Enterprises Are Uninterested in NoSQL: two things are sure: 1/ Michael Stonebraker has a long history in the data space and 2/ his posts are generating lots of waves
- MongoDB: A ToDo App with Ruby and PHP: MongoDB practical language tutorials.
- Big Data from Sensor Networks: want some impressive numbers that we’ll have to deal with in the BigData era?
My favorites from last week in NoSQL databases
- Neo4j Usecases in Telecom Space: usecases and case studies are the way to learn. And using the graph databases model requires a mind shift.
- Correction: OrientDB is a Document and Graph Store: not only because I got this wrong the first time, but it actually makes OrientDB sound interesting.
- Redis: Thoughts and Counter-Thoughts:
- HBase: Unit Testing Applications: as NoSQL databases adoption growth, we’ll need this more and more. Some are even a bit paranoid about their NoSQL databases (nb not necessarily a bad thing though).

NoSQL Databases Weekly Review 31
Last week most read posts about NoSQL databases
- NoSQL Frankfurt: A Quick Review of the Conference: the title says it all, a review of the NoSQL conference in Frankfurt.
- What Can We Learn from JPMorgan Database Outage?. We don’t have answers for everything, but sometimes even the right questions can help.
- MongoDB: Agile + Scaling: an involved (technical!) VC opinion on MongoDB advantanges.
- Learning MongoDB: assorted notes from a guy learning MongoDB (this is the 2nd part talking about replica sets, sharding, etc.)
- Riak in the Cloud with Joyent SmartMachines: usually vendor benchmarks are not so useful, but this one looks really interesting. Plus it was performed in a virtualized environment.
My favorities from last week in NoSQL databases
- NoSQL Databases and The Unix Philosophy: some say that what NoSQL databases are offering is too little. I do have a different opinion.
- NoSQL: 3 Things to Watch: in fact quite a few more things you should consider before saying I’m going NoSQL
- NoSQL: The Alternative to MySQL Sharding: some (and there are quite a few) problem you can run into when scaling MySQL
- Alternatives to Database Transactions: database transactions are not the only solution.
- Hadoop Usecase: Figting Spam in Big Data: dealing with spam is one of the 10 problems that you could use Hadoop for
- Membase Success Story: Zynga: during a busy week they can add 1000 new servers. Many of these are running Membase.

NoSQL Week in Review 27
Most read posts about NoSQL databases
- NoSQL databases: 10 Things you Should Know About Them: 5 pros and 5 cons of NoSQL databases discussed
- A Redis Admin UI: introducing a Redis admin. Meanwhile I’ve heard it already got an update. And as a bonus, Redis 2.0 is finally out!

As mentioned above, this last week has marked the release of the much awaited Redis 2.0. Judging by the reactions on Twitter, I’d say that CouchDB 1.0, MongoDB 1.6.0, and Redis 2.0 were the most welcome NoSQL databases releases I’ve seen since covering NoSQL news.

NoSQL Week in Review 24
This last week in NoSQL land has been pretty exciting bringing two new products in the NoSQL space: InfiniteGraph a new graph database and an enhanced, persistent, and distributed memcached-like Membase. We’ve also continued our series of MongoDB case studies and caught the release of two must read graph papers. Last, but not least, we’ve looked at a set (unfortunately still small) of good NoSQL benchmarks and performance evaluations.
What’s Hot in the NoSQL World
- What is Membase?
- Two Must Read Graph Papers
- Why I am dropping (for wrong or fake reasons) MongoDB for Mysql…
- My kind of DB: Redis
- Document Database Query Language
It’s interesting to note the discussions generated by the two posts Document Database Query Language and A Common NoSQL Query Language focusing on the future of a possible common ecosystem for data querying.

It’s interesting to note that the NoSQL readers are continuing to keep their eyes open to the new solutions in the space. Based on the last post in this section, I’d also suggest Redis cheatsheet and Automating Hadoop/HBase deployments with Puppet. And because I know you liked the Learning NoSQL from Twitter’s Experience, I’d suggest checking Presentations on Hadoop, HBase, PIG and Cascalog from Hadoop Meet-Up which adds quite a few details on working with NoSQL data.
