Google's MapReduce patent - no threat to stuffed elephants

by Alex Popescu

Unfortunately these are just pure assumptions and even if NoSQL projects argue (and can probably prove it) that their implementations are not tied to the Google’s MapReduce paper, I still don’t see things as clear as they should be with an emerging technology looking for broad adoption.

But the general assumption is that Google wouldn’t use its patent against Hadoop or any other software that takes a lead from MapReduce, including databaseware from the likes of Aster Data Systems or Teradata.

As I already said it[1], I think things would be much simpler if we would either see these projects getting a special free, perpetual, nonexclusive license or officially clarifying the differences so there will be no concerns left.
